Nature News: Owl boxes installed at five community parks in Dearborn

The Dearborn Department of Public Works recently installed Screech Owl boxes in order to encourage natural rodent control in the city.

Owls are superior hunters that prey on small nocturnal mammals, including rats.

The owl boxes were mounted 20 feet high in mature trees at Crowley, Levagood, Ford Field, Ford Woods, and Lapeer Parks. The boxes face south and east for protection from the elements and face open fields for a clear approach.

The city will be scouting additional areas for installing Great Horned Owl boxes.
